I have been in the Scrap Metal industry recycling Tungsten Carbide for the last 20 years, the last 4 of which have been with Tungco and I have seen many ups and downs. From 9/11, to financial collapses to global unease and pandemics, the one thing I have learned is that while the world still turns, our business does get affected, but at the end of it all, we come out stronger and more knowledgeable.
In a challenging climate we find ourselves stuck in the middle of a supply and demand chain. Manufacturers will need to generate Tungsten Carbide whether they be inserts, drills or wear parts coming from many big industries like Aerospace, Automotive and general machining of complicated components. My job is to procure this scrap and ensure my suppliers are well serviced on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. In a time of unrest, our concern remains with the sourcing and schedule of manufacturing. When such concerns arise we know the outcome, while temporary, means to hunker down and be patient.
This can lead to a lot of anxiety in the Carbide Recycling industry from suppliers and consumers alike. In the first or second downturn that happened at the beginning of my career it was very hard for me to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I myself was faced with the “doom and gloom” mentality, the feeling of how are we going to get out from under this. But 20 years can teach you a lot and I learned to look beyond immediate concern and continue to plan ahead.
