There are so many uses of tungsten carbide for dozens of industries. The price of tungsten carbide keeps fluctuating and the market is doing quite will as of late, due to a variety of reasons. One of the main factors that is contributing to the price of tungsten carbide is major scientific discoverers.
Using tungsten scrap, scientists have developed a new way to produce 400-nanometer-scale 3D images. The biological breakthrough can now help scientists probe evolutionary linkages among ancient animal species because the lenses can show small particles that were previously unseeable.
According to IEEE Spectrum, the new X-ray tube was produced in Sweden by Excillum and features a thin water-cooled tungsten target atop a diamond layer.
“The idea was to build an in-house system that can reach higher resolutions than commercially available devices,” said Mark Muller, physicist at the Technical University of Munich.
Composite materials are manufactured with two or more materials that have different chemical compositions. Thanks to the availability of tungsten carbide recycling materials, scientists were able to use this durable metal to reach these revolutionary new resolution sizes.
“We produced the world’s smallest X-ray focus using high efficiency lenses,” added DESY scientist Sasa Bajt from the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL). “The selection of the right material pair was critical for the success. It does not exclude other material combinations but it is definitely the best we know now.”
Scientists now hope that they can use these new X-ray lenses to understand the highly mechanical performance attributes inside new, environmentally friendly and high performance materials. Currently, the new optics can be used in a wide range of applications including spectroscopy and nano resolution imaging.
“This great achievement would not have been possible without a wonderful team with expertise in X-ray optics and theory, nanofabrication, material science, data processing and instrumentation,” Bajt added.
